Mayank Yadav, one of the fastest bowlers in the world, made a strong impression in his international debut during India’s 7-wicket victory over Bangladesh in the first T20I of a three-match series. Yadav, classified as an express pacer, not only showcased his pace but also demonstrated his ability to vary deliveries effectively. After the match, he shared an important piece of advice that head coach Gautam Gambhir had given him prior to his debut.
Yadav reflected on his nerves before the game, particularly since this series marked his return from injury. He had been out of competitive cricket for a while, which made the occasion even more significant.
“I was excited but also quite nervous. This was my comeback after injury, and I hadn’t played competitive cricket for some time before directly making my debut. That made me feel a bit more nervous,” Yadav revealed during an interview with Jio Cinema.
The recovery process, according to Mayank, had been challenging, with several ups and downs over the previous four months. He also acknowledged the hard work of the people who supported him during his recovery.
When it came to his debut performance, Yadav shared that his primary focus was on maintaining accuracy rather than solely relying on speed. He explained that in his first international match, he was more intent on being economical and maintaining a consistent line and length rather than pushing the speedometer.
“Today, I concentrated more on my body and focused on hitting the right lengths rather than bowling faster. I wasn’t concerned about my pace as much as I was about keeping my economy low and sticking to a proper line and length,” he added.
Yadav also mentioned how he adjusted his bowling during the game, noting that although he had used slower deliveries in the IPL, he made specific adjustments based on the conditions in Gwalior, which had less bounce. His captain advised him to rely on his stock ball more than experimenting with variations.
Mayank then revealed the crucial message from coach Gautam Gambhir before his international debut. Gambhir had told him to focus on the fundamentals and not overthink the situation.
“Coach told me to just stick to the basics and do what has worked well for me before. He advised me not to get too caught up in the fact that it was an international match and to avoid overcomplicating things. Following the same process was key,” Yadav concluded.
