What ICC rules say about the non striker run out
As per ICC rulebook, If the non-striker is out of his/her ground at any time from the moment the ball comes into play until the instant when the bowler release the ball, the non-striker is liable to be Run out. In these situations, the non-striker will be declared Run Out if he is out of his ground when his bails are dismissed by the bowler throwing the ball at the stumps or by the bowler’s hand holding the ball, whether or not the ball is subsequently delivered.
But the above case study has been split-up into 2 parts
If the BOWLER raised his hand to deliver the ball
In the above situation, the Umpire would make decision based on the bowler’s hand. if he has raised his hand to deliver the ball then this would be called as DEAD BALL and batsman would be Not-Out. No batsman could be declared OUT on a DEAD BALL.
If the BOWLER haven’t raised his hand to deliver the ball
In this situation, Batsman would declared OUT as the bowler haven’t raised his hand to deliver the ball. This also called as MANKADING. Ravi Chandran Ashwin is known for doing this kind of dismissal. Although Dasun Shanaka was OUT by this rule but he was called back by Indian skipper Rohit Sharma in spirit of game.
Rohit Sharma’s response on Shanaka run out
In the match presentation ceremony, he was asked about his decision to which he replied,
“I had no idea Shami did that (run-out), He was batting on 98*. The way he batted was brilliant, we cannot get him out like that. Not something that we thought off. Hats off to him he played really very well.”
Dasun Shanaka played his career best innings in the match, He started slow and scored his first 36 run in 45 balls but then he switched the gear and completed his 50 in 50 balls. Post that he played an aggressive inning and scored his 2nd hundread in just 87 balls with 12 fours and 3 sixes.
