The First Ever Test Match
Aus 1st Inning
The first ever test match of cricket history was played on 15th March 1877. The two teams contested in the match was Australia and England. Australia won the toss and skipper Dave Gregory choose to bat first. While the bigger fraction of audience were wondering about the game, opener Charles Bannerman batted like GURU, he scored a century (165 runs, 4X18) and became the world’s first ever cricketer to score a ton.
Australia made 245 runs in the first innings. English bowlers especially Alfred Shaw and James Southerton took 3 wickets each. English captain tried 7 bowlers but Alfred Shaw was the most effective. He bowled 34 overs maiden out of 55.3 overs and took 3 wickets at the expense of 51 runs.
Eng 1st Inning
The England’s first inning were more balanced but fall short. Opener Harry Jupp made 63 runs with 2 boundaries. The other couple of batsman who made a considerable contribution were Harry Charlwood (36 runs, 4X2) and Allen hill (35 runs 4X3). England made 196 runs in their first inning and were trailing by 49 runs. Billy Midwinter took 5 wickets at the expense of 78 runs in his 54 over spell. He became the first to take 5 wickets in an inning.
Aus 2nd Inning
Australia took the the lead of 49 runs in the first inning and were anticipating to take a winning lead. On the contrary, their whole inning were restricted at the score of just 104 runs. England got the target of 153 runs to register the first win.
Eng 2nd Inning
England had the achievable target to win the match and create history but they never seemed in position to win it. The first five wickets were lost at the score of just 62 runs and at one moment they were struggling to touch the 100 run mark. Tom Kendall was the key bowler to dismantle the England’s inning. He took 7 wickets at the expense of 55 runs in his 34 over spell.
Result
Australia won the first ever test match of history by 45 runs and took the lead of 1-0 in a 2 match series.
